Memorial Cup Schedule

Did you notice all my predictions for the game sevens were wrong? That's right: the NHL is as hard to predict as it is to eat soup like a fork and knife.

Don't look for too many updates around here for a while. Me and Mrs. NYIFORLIFE.com will be living the jet set life on a vacation out west. No truth to the rumor that we're sweeping into Phoenix to make a bid for the Coyotes, either. But we are going someplace hot and hopefully sunny.

While the NHL moves into the Conference Finals, the Canadian Junior ranks will hold their own hardware tournament, the Memorial Cup. Our friends over at the NHL Network (how did we live without you?) will be showing all the games in the tournament. I got to see some of the Memorial Cup last year and it was a heck of a lot of fun. Here's the schedule below:

Friday, May 15, 2009
6:00 PM Memorial Cup Preview Show
7:00 PM 2009 Memorial Cup: Kelowna Rockets vs. Rimouski Oceanic

Saturday, May 16, 2009
4:30 PM 2009 Memorial Cup: Drummondville Voltigeurs vs. Windsor
Spitfires

Tuesday, May 19, 2009
7:00 PM 2009 Memorial Cup: Windsor Spitfires vs. Kelowna Rockets

Wednesday, May 20, 2009
7:00 PM 2009 Memorial Cup: Rimouski Oceanic vs. Drummondville Voltigeurs

7:00 PM 2009 Memorial Cup Semi Final Game - Teams TBD

Sunday, May 24, 2009
4:30 PM 2009 Memorial Cup Championship Game: Teams TBD

And there is actually some Islanders news: Dan Lacroix has been let go and the word is that the Islanders will be looking to replace him with an assistant coach with "ties to the organization" to help out on the defensive end. We all know that our young d-core need a coach just for them.

See you in a while. Thanks for reading NYIFORLIFE.com

Happy Hockey Day in Canada!!

Today is the ninth annual celebration of hockey for our friends in Canada. I can't tell you how much fun it is to watch the Hockey Day in Canada presentation. You get three games and it all opens with a three-hour pregame show from a small town in Canada where the true spirit of our "neighbours" is celebrated and the country's love for the game is on display.

And, like I said, you get three games!
3:00 PM ET Ottawa @ Montreal
7:00 PM ET Vancouver @ Toronto
10:00 PM ET Calgary @ Edmonton

This year Ron and Don are headed to Cambpellton, New Brunswick. Hockey Day in Canada is available to us all on the NHL Network today beginning at noon. Sit back and enjoy the small town hockey experience. Trust me, you will never be disappointed and you'll eventually end up like me and you'll want to make this your own little holiday.

What Versus Does Right

Here at the home office, we like to think we have some reasonably decent opinions. Here's one you're all not going to believe in: we like Versus and we think they do a good job. So there.

As you'll recall, we live in Comcast Country. That means we get Versus and we don't even have to pretend to look for it. We also get the NHL Network and we are aware that it is on channel 276. So, you know, take that you whiny losers who complain you can't find the channels! It's just like your mother said: you can do anything if you try. Dumbass.

So, yeah, I like the way my favorite sport is covered on Versus. I think they do a good job. They'd be better if they dumped Brian Engblom, but that is a minor penalty for being trite and lame. Sure, there are other things they could do better, but overall, they're pretty good.

Now that I've complimented them and they all have a big head, I do have some suggestions on how they can do better. If it comes off as backhanded, then it's backhanded. Nothing I can do there.

Let's start with the greatest complaint out there; being that The Home of Hockey doesn't have a proper highlights show.

There's a couple of ways to attack this one. The most obvious would be just to run the NHLN's On The Fly show overnight and after the games. A simulcast would not be out of the question here. Comcast owns part of the NHLN and they own Versus. How hard is it to arrange this sort of thing? I don't know for sure, but it can't be too bad. Besides, don't we all need Dan Pollard and Gary Green to be on American basic cable?

The one thing that sticks out as a hold up to me might be the fact that the NHLN in Canada is sort of run by TSN and TSN is either owned or affiliated with ESPN so those bastards may not want "their" programming from Canada on a competitor in the USA.

So, if you can't do that, why not have Keith Jones, Bill Patrick, and that other mullety fellow hang around until, say, midnight and do a proper wrap-up show? Then, Mr. Versus Programmer, you can run the thing all night over and over like Sportscenter and you've got inexpensive programming that fills up blocks of broadcast time. Run your infomercials in the 6-9 AM slot and then run the NHL show again from 9-10 AM. After that, go back to shooting stuff until the games are on in the evening. Everybody wins! The hockey people who make up the bulk of your audience are served...you get the infomercial money...and the outdoorsy types who are currently indoorsy get to watch hunters shoot animals. Genius!

I don't know that there are a lot of complaints about the studio show. Keith Jones is fun and is a bit of a character but he is likeable. Bill Patrick is light-years ahead of Bill Clement with the hosting stuff. The real loser of the bunch is Brian Engblom; who can only be explained away by using his only TV move: Engblom has never met a cliché he didn't like. (See what I did there? I USED a cliché to make a point ABOUT a cliché! Can I work in TV now?)

And it isn't just the clichés. The man is just pure boring. Guys like Pierre and Milbury have personalities that blow you out of the water whether you like them or not. Engblom breeds indifference...which ultimately makes him a fist magnet after years and years of wondering how the guy got a TV job in the first place. No energy and no enthusiasm at all.

Last, let's tackle the announcers. The PBP guys are mostly solid dudes and are led by, of course, Mike Emrick. There's no one better in any sport than Doc and we all know that. I will argue this to the death!

Behind him is Joe Beninati, who is the regular Caps announcer and I think he is really good. He's always prepared, tells a story along with the game, and he brings a certain amount of excitement to his calls. He's saddled with another cliché lover, Darren Elliot. Elliot is okay in that non-offensive way where nothing he says makes you feel either good or bad at what you're watching. In a word: not great.

So, you know, more points to Joe for keeping his energy up during the games he works with Elliot.

John Forslund is the other main play-by-play caller. He cracks me up. You see, Forslund used to do Hartford Whalers games so I got to see a lot of his work back in the day and let me tell you, that professional announcer voice he uses now is not what he started out with. His work is fine and he calls the game well and whatnot, but that fake voice he uses just cracks me up. It's like if that Pimpled-Faced Teenager from The Simpsons was trying to sound important or something.

I know many people who are sort of split on Eddie Olczyk. Personally, I really enjoy how Edzo works with Doc. Both come off as excited to be there and have an obvious passion for the game. Did we ever get that vibe from Gary Thorne and Bill Clement? Well, yeah. Sometimes we did. But too often, didn't you get the idea that Thorne was on cruise control and that Clement was trying even though his partner wasn't giving him much to work with? Plus, let's never forget the embarrassing night when they were doing an Islander game and Carol Alt joined them in the booth. The two of them acting like giddy schoolgirls at a freaking Jonas Brothers concert instead of trying to be professional--and by the way--middle aged.

And to everyone who whines about the NHL not being on ESPN, think about what you're asking for. Sure, it would be nice to have NHL2Night again and all, but it ain't happening. They don't like us. I mean, they hired Pierre LeBrun for the website and all and that is great but if you remember back when they did broadcast the NHL, what did they do between periods? Did they send it back to a studio to talk hockey? Nope. They went to a stupid Sportscenter update that spent more time showing highlights of other sports like the NBA and college basketball than they did showing highlights of other NHL games being played around the league and whatnot. Personally, if I am tuned into a hockey game, I really don't care about what is happening in the NBA that night. If that's how they're going to treat it, then forget it.

Therefore, in short, I maintain that instead of bitching about what we don't have, let's be happy for what we do have. Could it better? Of course. But what Versus gives us now is still better than the alternative.

Retro Live Blog: The 1980 All-Star Game!

Courtesy of your friends at nyiforlife.com and the NHL Network it is February 5, 1980 and we are at the NEW Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with the Retro Live Blog.

The lineups are a bit clipped for time but here are the ones they do show:

Campbell Conference: Tony Esposito (G, Chicago); Bill Barber (W, Philadelphia); Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy of the Isles; Wayne Gretzky (C, Edmonton); and Phil Esposito of the Rangers. I guess there were no defensemen for the Campbell Conference who were deemed worthy enough to show their introductions.

First thing you notice is the hairstyles. Bill Barber has a pasted on greasy side-part that makes him look like half of the suspects featured on A&E. Phil Esposito is rocking the back-end of Darth Vader's helmet; the part without the face plate. Seriously, Gene Simmons has swiped this hairstyle for his reality show...which is also on A&E.

Here are the Prince of Wales announced participants: Don Edwards (G, Buffalo); Larry Robinson (D, Montreal); Marcel Dionne (C, LA); Guy Lafleur (RW, Montreal); and Darryl Sittler of the Maple Leafs. Oh, yeah. And Gordie Howe of the Hartford Whalers made his return to Detroit after years and years of being in the WHA and away from the team and city that he made famous. Gordie is a spry 52 at the time this game is played and he gets one incredible reaction that last for quite a long time from the crowd.

Did I mention the guy was 52 when this game was played? Man, I hope to be upright when I get to be that old. I'll probably be freebasing FLOMAX at 52 and this guy is in the freaking All-Star Game. They don't get much cooler than Gordie effing Howe. I mean, when a term is coined for something you've been known to do, like The Gordie Howe Hat Trick, you are on incredible bad ass. Nobody else has that. If you strike out three times with runners on base and a chance to win the ballgame, they don't call it an Alex Rodriguez Hat Trick. But if you get in a fight and add a goal and an assist, you scored the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Gordie's like John Wayne and James Dean in one prairie-reared Canadian!

The deal is here that the NHL Network called this game one of the "Twenty Best" games in some count-down series. The historical context of being Gretz' first All-Star Game and Gordie's last is the big selling point here. It was re-played to celebrate The Man's 80th birthday late last month.

Our announcers are Dick Irvin, Gary Doernhoffer, and Dan Kelly.

First Period: OK, so the obvious thing that hits you right away is the clean dasher boards and the lack of advertising all over the place. Then you tend to notice that they guys had a lot of room to skate because they were generally smaller players than we have today. Plus, it's an All-Star Game so the intensity has been dialed down a bit.

Gilbert Perrault has the first flurry. He picks the puck up in his own zone and stickhandles through the entire Campbell defense that was never announced and after a fake slapshot, Perrault dekes and backhands the puck just a bit wide. Yeesh. That was one heck of a move.

Hey, there's Jim Schoenfeld! He is playing for the Wales Conference and is called one of the best young defensemen in the game today by Dick Irvin. He touches up for icing and flips the puck to the referee, who is not Don Koharski. Sadly. That would have been a total comic convergence if it has been since we know that in ten or so years, one of them is going to famously call the other a fat pig. If you don't know which one is complaining about the other, please stop reading this post right now and check on some pre-season WNBA news or something.

Larry Robinson uses the Power of the Honky Fro to put the Wales Conference up 1-0 at 3:58 on a slapper just inside the Campbell zone. Tony Esposito didn't even move until it was past him.

Steve Payne of the North Stars gets a pass from Mike Murphy out of the corner and he roofs a one-timer to make it 2-0 Wales Conference at 4:19. Butch Goring--then of the Kings--got the second assist. Pack your bags, Butchie. You'll be moving east later in the month.

At 7:15, future Islander Mike McEwen sends a pass to Reggie Leach. The Flyer winger drives it past Don Edwards to put the Campbell Conference on the board. 2-1, Wales.

Dick Irvin points out that Bossy and Trottier are not wearing helmets in this game. It's pretty weird, actually. This game has been, so far, much more contentious than what we have become accustomed to with All-Star Games of a more recent variety. Plus, with the way some of these guys skate, I'd want to be wearing my lid in case someone fell down and I ended up cracking my head on the ice.

Here's something else you don't see every day: a face-off is called as the puck is pinned against the boards. No one was screaming to play the puck or anything. Man, when the hell was the last time you saw that in the NHL?

We are also learning that the phrase "tied him up from behind" meant "hooked" in today's vernacular. There's more hooking going on in this game than there is a Friday night around midnight on the Sunset Strip. Craig Hartsburg of Minnesota is called for an infraction and now we even have a penalty in the All-Star Game.

And yes, it was for hooking.

On the power play, Bossy gets stopped twice at close range. Esposito is skating like a dog trying to walk in deep snow. Seriously, the guy looks like he has bank safes tapes to his legs. Maybe he spent the night before at Studio 54 or something.

Later, Gordie get stopped on a half-slap in the slot and the crowd is enjoying themselves. They pop every time Gordie steps onto the ice.

Herb Brooks stops by to be interviewed by Dick Irvin. He's talking about the chances of the Americans in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. Somehow, I think he is going to end up doing okay.

Tony Esposito pulls himself from the game late in the first period. Some guy named Pete Peeters of the Flyers replaces him. We'll see him in May. At the time. Peeters was rocking an undefeated 20-0-5 record. Won't win him The Cup, but it sure is impressive.

At the end of the first period, the Price of Wales Conference leads the Campbell Conference 2-1. It's been sort of slow going, but that is to be expected for the time.

The Second Period begins and is the Larry Robinson Show. Totally smooth. He's kind of gliding out there and it is fun to see. I definitely believe he'd be successful in today's game.

Dick Irvin says, "they'd love it if he'd get one" for the thirtieth time as Gordie's shot is deflected into the crowd. Again, every time he touches the puck, people at "The Brand New" Joe Louis Arena are on their feet.

It just dawns on me that Wayne Gretzky is playing in this game and they haven't really said much about him. How strange is that? His first All-Star Game and everything and all the hype that came with Gretz and he really hasn't done too much. The cameras aren't picking up his every reaction like they would now either. Just weird.

Bossy tries skating into the offensive zone and he literally gets spun around on a hook and there is no penalty on the play. I hear Pierre McGuire in my head shouting, "Egregious!" Seriously, back then you had to come out of there with a picture of the other guy's wife and kids before they were going to make a call.

Kent Nilsson of the Atlanta Flames makes it 2-2 at 6:04 on a pass from Bernie Federko in the slot. A little later, we get our second goalie change as Edwards leaves the Wales crease and Gilles Meloche of the North Stars enters the cage.

Shortly thereafter, Meloche looks like he is going to be tested on a Campbell 3-on-1 rush but Jim Schoenfeld breaks up the play. Wow. Very impressive.

The guys in the booth then interview Wales Conference coach Scotty Bowman. When asked about his counterpart, Campbell coach Al Arbour, Scotty sticks to the time-honored hockey tradition of not saying anything and dancing around the subject. He obviously likes Arbour and is proud of him and all but trust me, he says about as much important stuff about the game as Sidney Crosby does anytime there's a microphone put in front of his face.

I met Scotty Bowman once and it was a surreal experience. I walked into one of the thousands of card shops that sprouted across the country in the nineties and there was Scotty Bowman and his son picking up some cards. As I walked in, I was totally shocked. I didn't know what the heck to say so I got real smooth and asked Bowman what the hell he was doing in Southington, CT? He said that Keith Olbermann (then of ESPN) told him about the shop (KO was in there all the time and was, quite frankly, a bit of a jerk) and that he had some time before the Red Wings played the Whalers that night. We chatted for a little bit and I can say that Scotty was a really classy guy once the shock wore off.

End of two periods, tied at 2.

What can you say about those NHL Network commercials with the coach who is trying to fire up his team? One buddy of mine thinks they're stupid but I get a kick out of them. Once the coach gets that faraway stare and rolls his eyes, I laugh like hell. He is so full of crap. Also, for the longest time, I was trying to figure out where I had seen the actor before. He plays a farmer on "Corner Gas" who finds Brent and Hank in an old tree house. So there you go.

And seriously, why don't they call the sport "pucky" and not "hockey"?

Onto period three...

Gretz is being interviewed about playing in his first All-Star Game. He is so monotone that it's like a test pattern. Right now I am wishing that I knew Morse Code so I could tell if he was blinking an SOS or not.

Seeing Reed Larson reminds me that there are quite a few future Islanders in the game. Goring of course will arrive later in February of 1980 and Mike McEwen will arrive a year or two down the line. And Larson played for the Isles in the early nineties and may have played long enough for a half-cup of coffee. I am snapped back to reality as Pete Peeters rips a shot by Schoenfeld out the air for a tasty glove save.

Dick Irvin is now interviewing Canadian Olympic co-coach Tom Watt. What's the deal with co-coaches? It doesn't matter because Watts isn't going to have a great time at the Olympics. Not as good as Herbie is going to, for sure.

At 4:14, Brian Propp of the Flyers pokes one home for the Campbell Conference. If you're still with me, the Campbells just took their first lead of the game. Meloche had stopped a Reggie Leach wrister but Propp pushed it by him.

Although I haven't said it, Marcel Dionne has had a strong game. The Detroit crowd is booing him all the time because he left the Wings in a contract dispute and went to Los Angeles where his career prospered and he flourished; albeit it purple hockey pants. You kind of forget just how good he was, which is a shame. Such a smooth and fluid game.

Ron Stackhouse ties it up on a goal at 11:40. Meloche was almost beaten on the other end and Lafleur picked up the loose puck and sent Darryl Sittler through the neutral zone. The Leafs captain slid it to Stackhouse and we have a tied game.

The Wales Conference comes right back at 12:40 as Craig Hartsburg flutters one over Peeters after Real Cloutier sent him through the Campbell defense.

Hold onto your hat! Reed Larson snaps one past Peeters and we have the fastest three-goal flurry in ASG history. It's now 5-3, Price of Wales Conference.

The scoring ends after Gordie Howe sends the fans home happy assisting on a Real Cloutier goal at 16:06. Your final is 6-3, Wales Conference. We don't stick around long enough to find out who was named the MVP of the game so I will say that it was...Gordie Howe because he is Mister Hockey. Dan Pollard of the NHL Network wraps it up. Not sure why this was selected as one of The Twenty Best games but, you know, what the hell. It was a fun little two hours.

What did we learn? Well, that people in Detroit really loved and appreciated Gordie Howe. Phil Esposito had lead hockey pants. Tony Esposito left the game early and we never really learned why. They said something about a hand but it wasn't followed up on. Co-coaches are generally a bad idea. And finally, that there actually was a few games out there where Wayne Gretzky just kind of blended into the woodwork.

Overall, I give the game a Retro B- in the rear view mirror.

Letters! We get letters! (Well, a few anyway.)

It's been a long time since I did the old mailbag, so why not now?
Here's a bushel basket of replies from the home office in West Hartford,
CT (via Middletown, CT) & thanks to everyone who has written in or left
comments. As always, I can be reached at nyiforlife (at) yahoo.com.

BLAKE55--Yes, it's true Jason is having a tough season in Toronto and
yes, I bet every morning he wakes up that he wishes he was back with the
Islanders and away from the Toronto media circus. Simply put, however,
the lack of scoring by our boys may not have been appreciably better if
Blake had remained an Islander. He year-to-date stats translate to a
projected 14 goal season. At what he is making, I'm sorry, but that is
a bust after potting 40 last season.

Viktor Kozlov is projecting to a seven goal season. He's really
lighting it up in Washington with 4 goals so far this year, eh? Did
that in one game vs. the Rangers last year. His Caps teammate, Tom
Poti, was a minus-1 player and had 44 points for the Islanders. This
season he's projected at minus-sixteen and 24 points. Maybe that is why
he was booed by Ranger fans when he played at MSG.

What does this all mean? Well, it means that Ted Nolan is a pretty damn
good coach who knows how to get what he can out of his players. But if
you take the numbers as they are and add them to the NYI roster, you can
see that the new teams these players are on are simply not getting what
they paid for. I mean, Kozlov is projecting Andy Hilbert numbers at
four times Hilbert's salary. Doesn't add up.

Philly--I still think Forsberg ends up with the Flyers or Colorado if he
comes back. Last thing I read was that he dropped out of a tournament
in December when his feet weren't yet comfortable in his skates. He has
since had another procedure and is going to be going to camp with Team
Sweden very soon. If he thinks he is fit and can withstand the rigors
of the Stanley Cup playoffs, he will find many suitors in the NHL.
Sixteen of them, perhaps.

Shazbot--Thanks for the kind words about the wrestling reviews. I will
try to get more of the WWE 24/7 programming reviews up on the site when
I can. I like to use the site more for my hockey writing than anything
else because that's how I roll.

I feel that it is hard to compare the Bret Hart book to the Chris
Jericho book because of the different tone each takes. Jericho's is
more like Mick Foley's writing in that both guys are funny and are using
the humor to help them describe what it was like to realize their
dreams. Bret's book is serious as heck throughout. Sure, there are
passages where you can almost see that sideways smirk of his but most of
it is laid out in a no-nonsense kind of way. (Search this site for my
review, keyword Bret Hart.)

Saying that, both are worth reading. If I were to read them again, I'd
reach for the Hart book first.

And no, I haven't seen the Best of RAW DVD yet. All I know is that
Stone Cold whacking Vince with the bed pan simply has to be on there.

Ron--Glad you asked about the NHL Network. I would suggest calling your
cable operator as soon as you can. I know that it is available to
Comcast digital subscribers but I am not sure if it is on some kind of
programming tier or not. You didn't hear it from me but I would also
recommend making many DVDs for summer viewing. That's my advice.

Lastly, I want to recommend John Buccigross' interview with the dean of
NHL TV, John Shannon. You can find it at the link above.

Also, a big ol' uppercase THANK YOU to John for asking about the audio
of the NHL game presentations. They really, really need to work on
that. The FSN crew is guilty of not miking the crowds in a way that is
not indicative of the genuine crowd reaction at the games. Watch
anything on the NHL Network from the 1980s and you can hear the passion
and excitement in the building. We need to get that juice back on TV.

Richard Park earns everything he gets!

Park's wrister with 1:17 left in OT gave our boys a 3-2 victory over the Capitals last night.

You have to enjoy this new tough-love "earn your playing time" deal that Ted Nolan is using on the guys. While it was strange to see guys like Andy Hilbert and Blake Comeau on the PP in the third period the other night in Pittsburgh, it's also a really good way to let the star players on the team know that they need to be held accountable as well.

Anyone read US Weekly? Did Lizzie McGuire break up with Mike Comrie? The Islanders need him to get his focus back and start doing all of those things that made the guy the star that he was for the first part of the season.

Miro's first period goal extended his latest streak to six games. He and Big Joe have been getting a rhythm of late while playing with a revolving door of wingers. The Isles really need Miro and Vasicek to keep it going as well. Guerin potted the Isles' second goal. He's playing better of late, I think.

I'm really looking forward to the WJC starting Wednesday. It will be great to see Kyle Okposo play so we can get sort of a free preview of coming attractions. The Isles have other junior players in the tournament and we'll get to spotlighting some of those guys once the games get started.

Also, in a last note, I just want to say that Dominik Hasek is a tool. I was transferring a copy of Classic Series to DVD for a buddy who is a Senators fan and they had the 1997 series between Buffalo and Ottawa where Dom may or may not have faked a knee injury to get out of playing. Of course they had some of the ancillary issues of the series as well, featuring Hasek pushing a reporter and then his lame statements about wanting to play, etc. It is really telling to me that in his press statement after the shoving incident that he named the owner by name, John Muckler by name, and when he should have said Ted Nolan's name, he just said "the coach". It wasn't that he just said "the coach" either, he said it fairly derisively.

Seriously, if you were to make a list of the hockey players you just can't root for under any circumstances, wouldn't Hasek be on that list? Hasek. Roenick. Darcy Tucker. Sean Avery. Oh, man. This could be longer than Santa's!

NFL Network vs. the NHL Network

OK, so we've had a little while to gauge the impact that the NHL Network
has on our lives. We know that it is better than crack, sliced bread,
and penicillin combined. So, what's left? Comparison shopping, of
course.

If you're like me--and you are because you are reading this--you've had
some time to sample the NFL Network over time and you have come to some
well-rounded conclusions because you're a thinker. There are a lot of
positives for NFL fans with the channel. For instance, if you are one
of those fantasy players, well, there is a lot of information for you on
there. Caring less about wins and losses and just worrying about stats
seems to be important to a large segment of the NFL fan base and the NFL
Network has nightly shows to tell you about fantasy points and how to be
a better gambler with all sorts of news on injuries and player
ineffectiveness. If you're looking for it, they have it. Stop your
shaking.

The NFL Network also has the mighty power of NFL Films and that cannot
ever be denied. I am wholly convinced that people in my age group had
their love of football shaped by the grainy images and war-time music
that totally classes up the entire NFL experience. To this day,
football highlights shot on film (as opposed to videotape) with the
Voice of God Guy talking over the epic and sweeping NFL theme library
still makes for arresting and interesting TV. No doubt about that.

The NFL Network also features talking head Rich Eisen with his
permasmile smirk. Say what you will about Dan Pollard, but I will take
the guy who looks like Max Headroom's fleshy stunt double and rocks all
the vivacity of a grilled cheese sandwich over a smarmy frat boy every
day of the week. Then again, maybe that is why I am no fan of ESPN.

Jerry Jones would also like all of the NFL fans who are cable
subscribers to change over to a satellite service because the larger
cable companies are resistant to put the NFL Network on basic cable.
They want to keep it on a digital tier or as part of a buy-in package of
channels. Now before you run out and do whatever the NFL tells you to
do, think about this: the only reason a megamillionaire like Jones wants
you to do that is because he and the other filthy rich NFL owners stand
to make a gajillion more bucks in advertising and subscriber fees if
their network is featured on basic cable packages. Basic cable means
access to more homes. More homes means more potential marks to be
pitched to. Increased marketing means more money for botched facelifts
for the iguana-like Jerry Jones.

I don't mind being marketed to at all. I don't like it but I accept it.
But to cloud the real issue like Jones is doing by blaming the cable
companies from giving you the NFL is like saying that Coca Cola is
rotting your teeth faster than Pepsi will. The NFL had a chance to make
nice by selling 8 games to Comcast and Versus but they turned around and
essentially sold the 8 games to themselves for less money and a chance
to build their network. That's pretty ballsy stuff. Plus they shut
cable out of the bidding for and/or sharing the NFL Sunday Ticket
package, preferring to take Direct TV's cash for exclusivity rather than
casting a wider net.

So, as you can see, when you add it all up, the NHL Network wins by
leaps and bounds over the NFL Network!! Wait--are you saying that I
really didn't have a lot of evidence in my debate? Are you thinking
that Deion Sanders is awesome on TV and that Larry Murphy and Bill Berg
are not dynamic and engaging personalities? Are you still wondering who
Max Headroom is and why I compared Dan Pollard to a lunch favorite of
children everywhere? If you are, you are so missing the point.

The NHL Network has hockey. The NFL Network does not. Hockey wins
every time!

Guerin Out Tonight; Isles on NHL Network

Bill Guerin reportedly did not make the trip with the rest of the guys to Philadelphia for tonight's game. He still has some bleeding in his eye but might be able to play on Thursday.

We know hockey players are tough and always play through injuries that would leave you and I weeping like widows but when you're talking about an eye, you've got to be careful. It's best to sit one out if you have to.

Greg Logan is also reporting that Sean Bergenheim will play tonight. He's been out for a week or two with an array of injuries.

The Isles have quite a few games coming up on the NHL Network. Here is the schedule for the next wee while so you can set the DVR:

The NHL Network

Crack is, indeed, wack

It doesn't take Whitney Houston and her oft-quoted declaration for us all to know that crack is wack. Yo, and word, fellow babies. But today I am here to talk about another kind of crack and this one is wholly desirable and won't cause you to lose your life savings or fail a standard drug test. That's because today's crack is the NHL Network.

I am a fan of football but I rarely if ever saw the need for the NFL Network. And don't get me started on NBA TV; even though I do admit to watching Larry Bird's 50 Greatest NBA Moments. That was a heck of a show. But now that the NHL Network is in America, I am proud to proclaim that the NHL Network is the greatest single invention in the history of mankind. Yes, it is better than penicillin and sliced bread combined. Combined.

Most of us were familiar with the NHL Network from seeing the ads on nhl.com or on the Center Ice package. I first really became aware of it during the playoffs two years ago when Versus--which I think was still OLN at that point--was playing the NHL Network's flagship highlight show, On The Fly, late each weeknight. Me and Tivo and OTF became good buddies then--even though I thought "On The Fly" was probably a fishing show because it was on the Outdoor Life Network. Anyhoo, the sight of expanded highlights with Dan Pollard and Gary Green and even former Islander Bill Berg was this hockey fan's dream. Imagine--other highlights that weren't necessarily just goals and big saves! Priceless playoff insight from Hall of Fame-caliber guys like Larry Murphy. Great stuff.

The NHL Network has been available to me for about two weeks or so. Two glorious weeks. Relatives have been teasing me for the silly grin I have on my face as I am watching the Canadiens play the Maple Leafs in a game from 1982. Or when I was watching the top ten moments in the career of Wayne Gretzky. I'm telling you, just knowing that there are all sorts of old, historic games out there on TV is a great thing for all of us who love hockey. I've recorded two Islanders games so far that I don't already have on DVD. It's just so fun to relive history.
