Okposo and Hillen Assigned to Sound Tigers

Okposo and Hillen set to play this weekend as Sound Tigers open Calder Cup Playoffs at Nassau Coliseum

Uniondale, NY – The New York Islanders have announced today that forward Kyle Okposo and defenseman Jack Hillen have been reassigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Okposo and Hillen are scheduled to dress for the Sound Tigers this weekend when they open up their East Division semifinal series at the Nassau Coliseum versus the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Game One is this Friday night, April 17th at 7:30 p.m. with Game Two scheduled for Saturday, April 18th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale for both games at www.soundtigers.com.

Okposo played in 65 games for the Islanders this season and scored 18 goals with 21 assists for 39 points. He led all Islander rookies in points and goals scored while finishing second overall in team scoring. Okposo suited up in 35 games for the Sound Tigers in the 2007-08 season when he made his professional hockey debut and scored nine goals with 19 assists for 28 points. He was drafted in the first round, seventh overall, by the Islanders in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Hillen played in 40 games for the Islanders this season scoring one goal with five assists for six points. He also played in 33 games for the Sound Tigers, scoring three goals and 13 assists for 16 points. Hillen mark of 0.52 points per game led all Sound Tigers defensemen. The Islanders signed him as an undrafted free agent on April 1, 2008.

And so it ends...

An uninspired 6-2 loss to the Bruins brings an end to the Islanders season. Now we get to put all of our hope into ping pong balls and local government. Made me nervous just typing that sentence.

The Sound Tigers will be facing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American League Playoffs. Bridgeport finished 49-23-3-5 for 106 points and also had an amazing 62 points at home.

The Tigers will be invading the Coliseum for their first two playoff games this Friday and Saturday nights before playing game 3 in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday afternoon. Gotta love those AHL schedules.

Game 1 -- Friday, April 17, at Nassau Coliseum, 7:30 PM
Game 2 -- Saturday, April 18, at Nassau Coliseum, 7 PM
Game 3 -- Sunday, April 19, at Wilkes-Barre, 5 PM
Game 4 -- Wednesday, April 22, at Bridgeport, 7 PM
x-Game 5 -- Friday, April 24, at Wilkes-Barre, 7 PM
x-Game 6 -- Saturday, April 25, at Wilkes-Barre, 7 PM
x-Game 7 -- Sunday, April 26, at Bridgeport, TBA

x = if necessary

Isles lose to Flyers 3-2

Fan Appreciation Day #1 saw the Nassaumen drop the game to the visiting Flyers 3-2. Kyle Okposo was back and was his usual self. Billy and Jiggs talked during the game about how Okposo will be playing for Team USA at the World Championships in Switzerland.

Game #82 is tomorrow versus the Bruins. The draft lottery is Tuesday.

Tonight we have the NCAA Men's Hockey championship...or, as I like to call it, one more night with Masters Pop-up Ads and Baseball Highlights. Boston University and their coach "Jackie" Parker take on Miami of Ohio.

Also, Bridgeport hosts the Lowell Devils tonight. The Sound Tigers are tied for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the Hershey Bears with 104 points. Against the Springfield Falcons last night, the Tigers won 4-3 on Jesse Joensuu’s 20th goal of the season.

Brendan Witt got five games for his hit on Hagman Thursday night.

I've been really bad this year covering the Sound Tigers but you can read about their game last night in Philadelphia at the Connecticut Post. SOUND TIGERS SIGN PARRISH TO P.T.O.

Bridgeport, Conn. – The Bridgeport Sound Tigers have signed forward Mark Parrish to an amateur P.T.O. (Professional Tryout) contract. Last season, Parrish played with the Minnesota Wild and in 66 games, he registered 30 points (16 goals and 14 assists). A proven leader, Parrish served several times throughout his two years with the Wild as the team's captain.

A native of Bloomington, MN, Parrish is a veteran of 660 NHL games and has scored 208 goals and 164 assists for 372 points. Parrish was part of the Islanders organization from 2000-2006. During that time, Parrish became a main-stay on the Islanders' power-play and had his best season during the 2001-02 when he tallied 60 points (30g and 30a).

Parrish spent a brief part of his professional career in Connecticut when he played for the New Haven Beast when they were a part of the American Hockey League. As a member of the Beast, Parrish played in only three games but had two points in three games.

The 31-year old Parrish was originally drafted by Colorado in the third round (79th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Islanders claim D Pock from Rangers

The Islanders claimed defenseman Thomas Pock from the Rangers today. According to numerous reports, Pock is on a one-way deal so you know he is starting the season on the Island.

I always was sort of impressed when I saw Pock play for the Rangers but there were times where you wondered about his concentration at times. He made some odd decisions at a couple of games I saw him play with the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack but he also is a puck-moving defenseman and we know that those are a priority in the league right now.

Last year, Pock played only one game for the Rangers. He appeared in 74 games with the Wolfpack, scoring 7 goals and adding 37 assists.

Some Other Stuff I'm Thinking About on a Boring Day at Work

First off, how did I miss reporting that the Isles now have a working agreement with a team called the Odessa Jackalopes of the CHL. That means that the team now has the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) as their top developmental team and the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL to go along with the Jackalopes.

I know what you're thinking. Say it with me: what the heck is a Jackalope?

Well, for starters, it at first sounds like it could be the product of an unholy union between a jackass and an antelope. Makes sense, right? So I looked it up on Wikipedia because Wikipedia is about 85% correct at any time and/or space. This is that they said:

"...the jackalope is a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope, hence it's name."

Punctuation aside, you have to marvel at how Wikipedia has made life easier for people like me who are only concerned with a quick corroboration that may or may not be about 85% correct.

So, you know, I was close. Makes sense since the logo above looks like a pissed-off rabbit.

Item #2: Did you see how the Wild cut fish with Mark Parrish? Were you surprised that we never really had anything about that here? Well, there's a simple reason: we were wrapped up in The Comcast Incident at the time.

Now, this being an Islanders (Forum of One) and Mark Parrish being a popular former Islander, does that mean he could make his way back to the team? I don't see why not. He had his best years playing on Long Island and is going to feel like he has something to prove. The Islanders, we all know, are going to need some goals to come from somewhere. Why not from Mark Parrish?

All of this speculation really boils down to the fact that Snow and Gordon are committed to The Kids and making Kyle Okposo and Blake Comeau the players we hope that they'll become. There's a lot of qualified leadership in the room right now and from comments made by Bill Guerin and Doug Weight, the guys are on board with the edict and see themselves as players who are giving back to the next generation of guys.

Does Mark Parrish fit into this plan? Maybe. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he came back to the Islanders in one of those one-year/prove yourself kind of deals. Saying that, it also would not surprise me if Parrish found his way to Peter Laviolette's Carolina squad, either.

Item #3: The prank "Favre" jersey given to John Bailey at his introductory presser. Man, I gotta tell you, that was funny. I'm a Giants fan who's opinion of Favre has taken a turn south since his flip-flop-and-fly over the past off-season. But still, with all of the hype and press the Jets have been getting, it was still fun to see Bill Guerin and Doug Weight have a little fun at the rookie's expense.

And you know, rumor is that Bailey is going to get a very long look in camp after his performance with the other Islanders rookies this summer. Word is that the team told him to look into getting a place on the Island so you have got to think they are expecting him to make a serious push in training camp. With Doug Weight, a (hopefully) healed Mike Sillinger, Mike Comrie; and others pushing for time at center, Bailey is going to have a tough road ahead but all indications are that this is a pretty good kid with some skill. Does that mean he is NHL ready at age 18? We'll see.

Well, there you go. Another free post for everyone. We'll have more on the Scott Gordon press conferences and whatnot later tonight or tomorrow morning. We also are working on a special supplement to The Hockey News' Ranking of the NHL logos. I'll be joined in this by The First Lady of NYIFORLIFE.com, my wife and fashion consultant, Linzi, and it should be up here some time this week.

Satan and The Tank go to the Penguins; Isles add 6

The Penguins raided the Isles pantry on Thursday, signing Miroslav Satan to a one-year deal that TSN is reporting to be worth $3.5 million. The Pens also picked up former Islander Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year, $2.5 million contract as well.

The Isles also announced the signing of six players for depth in the organization. All of the following have signed one-year, two-way contracts according to the team: C Mike Iggulden (formerly of the Worcester Sharks), D Brett Skinner (Providence Bruins), F Kurtis McLean (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) and F Mitch Fritz (Hartford), D Chris Lee (Iowa Stars ) and G Peter Mannino from the University of Denver.

Iggulden and Skinner were AHL All-Stars in 2007-08. Skinner and Mannino also attended the University of Denver together.

Yesterday the Islanders announced the signing of G Yann Danis. Presumably, he and Mannino will be manning the nets in Bridgeport this season.

NYIFORLIFE.com chat with Sound Tigers' beat writer Mike Fornabaio

Michael Fornabaio has been with the Connecticut Post since 1997 and has covered the Sound Tigers for their entire seven-year existence. We recently had a chance to ask Mike a few questions about the Sound Tigers, the Islanders prospects, and what a beat writer's daily ritual is like.

We here at nyiforlife.com want to thank Mike for taking some time to help us out. At the end of this post will be some links to Mike's work at the Connecticut Post.
--Bill

NYIFORLIFE.com--I think some people must think that covering a pro team is mostly watching games and writing about what happened. Can you give us an idea of what your average day is like covering a Sound Tigers home game?

Mike Fornabaio--Well, I watch the game for two and a half hours, and the other five and a half, I spend on the blog.

No, home games, it kind of depends. If I need to get something, or if something's likely to be going down, I'll make a point to be at the morning skate, 10 a.m. If not, or if I've arrived home from Hershey at 4 a.m., I might not. Then home, usually, and if there's something then to be written up, maybe get it done then, or maybe a little later. Call a few people to (I hope) make sure the world isn't ending behind my back.

Either way, off to the barn to be there two, two-and-a-half hours before the puck drops. Checking in with lots of people -- front office, hockey ops, maybe the other team there if they haven't skated in the morning, the broadcasters, other writers. Just see what's what, maybe chase some whispers. Get set up, check around the Internet for important news and/or for blog-ticker stuff. And if I have to send an early something, send it. And then get down to it: Barring something crazy going on, I want to be in place by the start of warmup, to count heads, to get lineups, to make sure Dennis Bonvie and Chris Thompson don't start jabbing at each other. That's about 40 minutes before the puck drops.

So, yeah, then there's a game. Then there's a 10-minute cooling-off period. Then we go and talk about it for 10-30 minutes, depending on time constraints. For a 7 p.m. start, given no overtime (and given our new, thankfully later deadlines), I'll probably have around 45 minutes to decipher my notes and churn out a game story. Then it'll take me 10 minutes to try to get it to the office before I cave in and e-mail it (The phone lines are quirky at AHY.) Then get down to the postmortem for the blog, which became the norm very quickly two years ago. I've tried to cut back on the endless posts -- I was spending half my life deconstructing three-on-three rushes there for a while -- but still, depending on what else is going on in the world, that can take a while.

Update the stat files I keep, and I'm usually home by about 11:45, or if it's late in the season and we're waiting on scores, 12:30.

NYIFORLIFE.com--Lots of Islanders fans wonder where all the goals went when Jeff Tambellini played for the Isles versus when he played in the American League. What do you think Jeff needs to do to make himself successful at the NHL level?

Mike Fornabaio--Every time Nigel Dawes had a couple of visible shifts for the Rangers recently, I'd think back to early in the year, when he couldn't crack the lineup and was putting up sick numbers in Hartford. I joked to someone in January that the Islanders and Rangers should be done with it and trade Dawes for Tambellini, so maybe they'd both get a shot.

Like for Dawes, I wonder if it's just a matter of time for Tambellini. He came back down in December and was doing all the work-the-boards, go-to-the-net things they wanted him to do, and it paid off here. I haven't seen enough of the Islanders' games to get a great read on what changes up there, but he has too much going for him to think the right fit won't happen eventually.

NYIFORLIFE.com--Jack Capuano. Your impressions on the job he did this past season. I'm thinking it is tough not knowing who will be on your team with all of the injuries and callups this past year.

Mike Fornabaio--Well, his primary job is development, and the Islanders appear to be happy about that. It seems as if the guys who go up fit in pretty well. He's quick to credit assistants Pat Bingham and Bernie Cassell for their work, too. As far as wins and losses, given the inexperience on the blue line, and given the lack of scoring at times from guys not named Tambellini, and given the carousel of call-ups down the stretch, they did all right.

And of course most importantly, the whole staff is great with the media.

NYIFORLIFE.com--Who aside from Okposo and Comeau do you think is ready to compete for a NHL job from the Sound Tigers?

Mike Fornabaio--Depends on what kind of jobs are open. There are some in the organization who would be thrilled to go with a very young lineup. There are others who shudder at the thought. But probably everyone who went up this year could at least compete for a job, given the right role. It seems to be universally felt that Dustin Kohn and Trevor Smith, if they continue to develop the way they have, will inject themselves into that conversation by the end of next season.

Thanks again, Mike. We appreciate it.

Mike's Soundin' Off Blog is great for all of your AHL and Sound Tigers news.

Islanders Team Report; courtesy Yahoo! Sports

Ted Nolan seems resigned that he’s not going to be re-signed any time soon.

Nolan’s future as head coach of the Islanders remains muddled, a notion he confirmed in a recent published report. Speaking at a Canadian awards banquet May 2, Nolan said he expects to enter the 2008-09 season as a lame-duck coach and without a contract extension.

“It’s a tough situation,” Nolan told the Sault Star. “But I’ve faced a lot of tough situations before. I just want to go into next season, concentrate on fulfilling my contract, do a great job and make sure I get another contract somewhere.”

Nolan’s use of “somewhere” doesn’t sound promising regarding his expectation to coach the Isles beyond this season. He claims the Isles haven’t reached out to him about an extension, and he doesn’t plan to broach the subject with GM Garth Snow and/or owner Charles Wang.

Bill's note: Please let's not make a huge mistake on this one. Get the man signed and let him and the fans know that he is the guy going forward. Nolan is quite popular with the fanbase and deserves some security.

Another note: We'll have our interview with Mike Fornabaio of the Connecticut Post up some time this weekend. Mike's been covering the Sound Tigers for seven years now and has some great insight into what the day of a beat reporter is like and some insight on some of the guys that will be playing for the Islanders next season.

Sillinger Update; Marcinko Signed; Guerin Jobbed on Tirico

Here's a link to a new article on Mike Sillinger and how he is doing. Long story; short: he is off his crutches.

The Isles have announced the signing of 2006 fourth round draft pick Tomas Marcinko to the entry-level three-year contract. Follow this link to the team's website for more on Marcinko. GM Garth Snow spilled the beans on this one last week at the "Stakeholders' Meeting".

If you tuned into ESPN Radio at 2 Eastern to hear captain Bill Guerin on the Mike Tirico Show, you didn't hear much. Billy's phone crapped out on twice so that meant we had to hear noted tool and smug Sportscenter anchor Scott Van Pelt put his gold cred to use talking about the NHL. I think I threw up about twice on the drive home.

And finally, before checking out the two game sevens tonight on Versus (yes, Versus), head over to the Connecticut Post to read Mike Fornabaio's season wrap-up regarding the Sound Tigers. It features thoughts by Bridgeport's team president, Howard Saffan.

Just writing about it gives him attention, but...

If you're reading this then you probably are aware that Sean Avery is an attention-seeking child. For those who missed it, look it up online because I am not going to post it here. Suffice to say that Sean Avery embarrassed himself and the league by flapping his arms and stick in front of Brodeur the other night. The Rangers were on a 5-on-3 and he was facing Brodeur and doing everything but jumping jacks like an idiot in front of Brodeur in an attempt to get him off his game. Avery is such a complete loser. The more I think about it, the more the Devils are also such losers from not even going after Avery for being such a clown and a bush-league tool. You think if Scott Stevens was still playing that he wouldn't have introduced Avery to the Rangers' team dentists? Stevens would have hit him so hard that Avery would have to fart to clear his own throat AND he'd be waking up next week just to do it! Man, even Ken Danyeko would have gone after him for that crap. Brent Sutter is the Devils coach and to see some clown act like such a freaking low-rent, disrespectful fool must have given him piles. Can you imagine a Sutter acting like some attention-starved idiot? They'd throw him out of the hay loft on the family farm in Viking, Alberta just to see where he'd land. I'm surprised Sutter didn't come off the bench and hit Avery with his shoe. Honestly, who uses a shoe?

(Is it wrong to use an Austin Powers reference in 2008? I don't keep up on my memos.)

Plus, and this is worse, Larry Brooks defends this immature horsepile in today's New York Post. Again, I am not going to link to it because it just gives them more of what they want but trust me, Larry Brooks either has a man-crush on Avery or he will just side with the Rangers over any little thing.

COMING UP LATER THIS WEEK: Our exclusive interview with Mike Fornabaio, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' beat writer for the Connecticut Post. Mike's been covering the team for a few years now so check out the interview sometime this week on NYIFORLIFE.com.

MacDonald Stars in Loss to Devils; Playoff Push for the Sound Tigers

Well, what can you say about Joey MacDonald? Even got himself a little chant going amongst the Islander faithful last night. MacDonald is surely making the most of his opportunity to play for the Islanders. He was outstanding last night making 45 saves in a losing effort to the Devils.

The Islanders-slash-Sound Tigers managed only 22 shots on Martin Brodeur. Big Josef Vasicek got a breakaway goal for the Isles. Our boys had a valiant defensive effort that was just blown to hell when Zach Parise deflected a puck past MacDonald 29 seconds into the overtime session. Parise is really making the Islanders pay for taking Robert Nilsson in the draft a few years ago. Man, if we could get a do-over on that pick, that would be sweet.

The Devils, with the victory, finally claimed a playoff spot. The Isles, while playing a spirited and spunky brand of hockey, seem on the brink of locking up a decent pick for the 2008 Entry Draft.

The Sound Tigers play Manchester tonight. They are four points out of fourth place. Get this Iron Man stat from the Connecticut Post's Mike Fornabaio: Sunday's Sound Tiger game versus Hartford (boo!) was the tenth in 13 days for Matthew Spiller and Steve Regier. They both played seven games in eight days. Tim Jackman played six games in seven days on the Long Island to Bridgeport shuttle and eight games in the last twelve days.

No wonder the Isles called up Drew Fata, Matt Keith, and Kip Brennan, eh?

Panthers 4, Islanders 2

The lineup was depleted but our boys put up a fight last night. Still came up short, though, 4-2. The Islanders were missing a total of ten regulars from their lineup due to injuries and sickness so the Isles had to dip into the system and dress defenseman Matthew Spiller and forwards Steve Regier and Tim Jackman. The Islanders were without Ruslan Fedotenko (sprained knee suffered against Tampa), Brendan Witt (sprained MCL) and Andy Hilbert. Good news is that Bruno Gervais might be ready to go for Saturday's game in Montreal at the Bell Centre. We really need some help here as the Isles ride out the season.

Islanders goals were scored by captain Bill Guerin and Blake Comeau. Comeau also had a chance to tie the game late but his shot went just over the net. Florida added an empty-netter by Brett McLean shortly thereafter.

How'd you like to work in the front office of the Islanders last night? Think about this one. Because of injuries and illness, the Islanders called up Matthew Spiller, Steve Regier, and Tim Jackman. Ben Walter had gone up Tuesday and scored against the Lightning. They sent Jeremy Colliton back to Bridgeport but he didn't arrive in time for the Sound Tigers game last night so they had to scramble to field a team last night. The Tigers called up Jeff Dwyer and Olivier Labelle from Utah and signed two players from outside the system to pro tryout contracts just to field enough players to lose to Binghamton 6-3. Not a great night all around for the Islander organization.

I got a bit of an interesting question this morning from a friend who is a regular reader. He asked me what I am going to write about now that the Islanders are just about eliminated from the playoffs. Well, I guess I'll be writing about the Islanders for the most part. I'll still be here to talk about my feelings on the playoffs. I just don't stop watching hockey because my team is out of it. My fandom is not as (shall we say) fervent, but I am along for the ride just the same.

We also have the big Ric Flair retirement parade pulling into Florida this month. I'm guessing that I will have something on that. So far, from what I have seen, this whole "riding into the sunset" angle has been butchered and not given the treatment many think it should have. I am sure that Flair's match at Wrestlemania against Shawn Michaels is going to be the most memorable and emotional ride of both men's careers. I won't be seeing it live because I am just morally against shelling out $54.95 to see one match.

We also will have a series of columns about hockey cards that my wife has been after me to write for years. Look for that sometime in April.

Islanders D Sutton out 4-6 weeks

UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- New York Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton will miss up to six weeks after an MRI revealed a partial tear of his hamstring, the team announced Tuesday.

Sutton, who suffered the injury during Monday's 3-2 win over San Jose, has appeared in 58 game for New York this season, recording one goal and seven assists.

To replace Sutton, the Islanders recalled defenseman Drew Fata from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League.

The 6-1 Fata has played in 48 games this season with the Sound Tigers, registering three goals and five assists. His 156 penalty minutes rank second on the team.

COLLITON JOINS ISLANDERS

New York Islanders
Feb 6, 2008, 12:31 PM EST

Center Jeremy Colliton was recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on an emergency basis and joined the Islanders for practice at Iceworks this morning.

It is an opportunity Colliton has earned with his tenacity and perseverance after undergoing shoulder surgery last season. In 47 games with the Sound Tigers this season, Colliton has matched up against the opponents' top lines and has seen significant penalty killing time. He has six goals and three assists and is second on the Sound Tigers with two shorthanded goals.

Colliton played 19 games for the Islanders in the 2005-06 season and one game the following year. He has recorded one goal and one assist in the NHL.

The native of Blackie, Alberta was originally drafted by the Islanders in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft. In 158 career games over three seasons with the Sound Tigers, Colliton is 37-47-84. In junior, he was a member of Team Canada at the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships and was captain of the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League.

Aaron Johnson has been recalled; Dubie sent to The Bridge

According to the Islanders' website, Isles defenseman (and sometimes winger) Aaron Johnson will be suiting up tonight for the Sound Tigers in Philadelphia tonight to take on the Phantoms. After the game he will be recalled and presumably will be in the lineup Saturday night when the Flyers come to town.

I guess this does not mean Chris Campoli got great news with his shoulder that he injured against the Devils. Johnson played well for the Islanders in a checking role up front and on the blueline when needed. Again, this is a great testament to the Islanders' defensive depth. He brings 121 games of NHL experience back to the lineup.

Wade Dubielewicz was sent back to Bridgeport this morning on a conditioning stint. Not sure if he will get the start in Philadelphia tonight or not. Mike Morrison swaps places with Dubie and will backup Rick DiPietro with the big club for the time being.

Again, this is a good thing for Dubie. Ricky is going to play the overwhelming majority of games and if he is to be counted on for the spot duty they'll need, Dubielewicz is simply going to need real-game action. Practice shots are no match for in-game play.

Morrison has had three shutouts for the Sound Tigers this year and a 2.70 goals against average.

Also, in other Sound Tiger news, Justin Bourne has been called up to Bridgeport from Utah of the ECHL. One stop closer to the big club for the son of Islander alumni!
