Seven straight losses...er, "non-wins"
Yep, after dropping the game in OT on Saturday to Minnesota, the Isles suffered their seventh straight loss. The record of 0-6-1 is the worst stretch in Ted Nolan's Islanders coaching career. In a game where Sean Bergenheim scored with a little over 4 minutes to go in the game, it looked like the streak was going to end. But just 41 seconds later, a guy who was almost an Islander, Brian Rolston, scored on an uncharacteristic fat rebound left by Rick DiPietro and the game was tied, 3-3.
Brent Burns scored the overtime winner for the Wild. At this point, it was academic.
For the first time in the Ted Nolan Era, the Islanders have been finding ways to lose rather than ways to win. The Isles outshot the Wild. They always outshoot their opponents. That is not news. They just don't score enough. On a night where you figure three goals is good enough because you have a real good goalie, it should. But the offense has to be able to pick it up and pot a couple extra for the goalie when he has a rough night.
Also--and this bears mentioning--in a game where Andy Hilbert AND Sean Bergenheim both score goals, you need to win those games!
The one-pointer is significant. The Isles are tied for the next-to-last worst record in the East with the traveling carnival show that is the Maple Leafs. Actually, the Isles are technically ahead because they have played one less game that Toronto but no matter how you look at it, both teams have an underwhelming 55 points. Tampa has 52. If it were all to end today, the Isles could pick no worse than fifth in the entry draft. I am just saying.
