Isles beat Carolina; Campoli out for the year; Freddy re-signed
The Islanders took penalties and the Islanders took advantage.
What?
I mean, we all knew the Islanders PK was good but this good?
Mike Sillinger scored two while the team was down a man and Richard Park added the other for the Islanders, who now have seven goals on the penalty kill this season.
Wade Dubielewicz held off a furious offensive, well, Hurricane, in the third period with 19 saves in the last period. Overall, Dubie made 44 saves to pick up his fifth win of the season.
LOD honorary member Brendan Witt added a third period goal for the Isles and versatile Blake Comeau--who we have seriously not talked about enough in this space--added an empty netter to seal the victory for our boys. The Islanders are currently in seventh place overall in the Eastern Conference heading into the game Thursday with eighth-place Boston.
We should make mention of the effort made by Sean Bergenheim on his goal to give the Isles a 4-1 lead in the second. Bergenheim was skating into the Carolina zone by himself when he was tripped from behind. As he fell, Bergenheim poked the puck past Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward. Make an effort to search it out online if you missed it. Heck of a goal from a guy who always is playing hard but doesn't have a lot to show for it on the scoresheet.
There was some good news/bad news for the Islanders blueline before the game. Chris Campoli will miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery on his shoulder. It's a big loss for the team as Campoli was playing meaningful minutes in every situation.
In the good news, Freddy Meyer earned a two-year extension. What a crazy year for Freddy, but since he's been back, Meyer has been very valuable while players like Witt and Martinek missed time with injuries.
