CAPTAIN CANADA IS AN ISLANDER!

The Isles totally nutted up today and traded former first-round draft picks Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson plus the team's first-round pick this year to Edmonton for winger Ryan effing Smyth!

Smyth signed a two-year contract worth 7m that expires after this season. The Oilers had been frustrated in their attempts to sign him to a new deal and now the Isles reap what Edmonton could not sow. How effing amazingly cool is that?

Jason Blake also remains on the Island so this totally means that the team is going to make a major push toward the playoffs. Sure, bringing on Smyth and his expiring contract is a gamble, but my guess is that Snow and the Islanders Brain Trust are hedging that they'll be able to bring back either Smyth or Blake next season. I doubt that they will be able to bring back both.

Needless to say, I almost passed out as fast as Tom Brady did when he found out his ex-girlfriend was pregnant when I read the news on Newsday. Today is a great day to be an Islander fan.
